Age Policy Clarification

Thank you for your patience during this transition. We are fortunate to have on-going support of Badminton Canada during the process of implementing this important policy change. I trust you will find this particular communication helpful in providing the information you need to assist in making decisions. 

Badminton BC will be working closely with Tournament Hosts to ensure the correct age categories are listed on event registration files from the get-go. We will also provide assistance to our athletes during the registration process to ensure correct age category registration, and to ensure they meet the Provincial and National Championship Eligibility Criteria

A Message From Badminton Canada


There have been lots of requests for clarifications on the new age categories for Junior Events. In an attempt to clarify this issue, please note the following interpretation, explanations and examples related to the new age categories:
 

Junior Event Age Policy Changes


U15

New Policy – Under 15  - Players are eligible to compete in this age category provided they remain under 15 years of age throughout the calendar year in which the National Championships are held.

Interpretation for 2014/15 – For events before December 31st,2014 athletes are eligible to compete in this age category if their birthday is on or after January 1, 2000. For events After January 1st, 2015 athletes are eligible to compete in this age category if their birthday is on or after January 1, 2001.

Explanation – For events before December 31st,2014, the 2014 National Championship (May 2014) is the national championship that occurred in this calendar year. Events after January 1st, 2015, the 2015 National Championship (May 2015) will be the national championship  that occurred in this calendar year

Examples
#1 Erin is born September 1st, 2000 and is currently 14 years old. She is eligible to play in the U15 age category inevents that take place before December 31st, 2014. After January 1st, 2015, she in ineligible to compete in U15 events as she turns 15 on September 1st, 2015 which is during the calendar year of the 2015 Championship.

#2 Stan is born September 1st, 2001 and is currently 13 years old. He is eligible to play in the U15 age category in events that take place before December 31st, 2014 and after January 1st, 2015,  as he is under 15 years old in both the 2014 and 2015 calendar years.


U17

New Policy – Under 17 (generally for 15 and 16 year olds) - Players are eligible to compete in this age category provided they remain under 17 years of age throughout the calendar year in which the National Championship are held.

Interpretation for 2014/15 – For events before December 31st,2014 athletes are eligible to compete in this age category if their birthday is on or after January 1, 1998. For events After January 1st, 2015 athletes are eligible to compete in this age category if their birthday is on or after January 1, 1999.

Explanation – events before December 31st,2014, the 2014 National Championship (May 2014) is the national championship in that occurred in this calendar year. Events after January 1st, 2015, the 2015 National Championship (May 2015) will be the national championship in that occurred in this calendar year.

Examples
#1 Margot is born August 1st, 1998 and is currently 16 years old. She is eligible to play in the U17 age category in events that take place before December 31st, 2014. After January 1st, 2015, she in ineligible to compete in U17 events as she turns 17  on September 1st, 2015 which is during the calendar year of the 2015 Championship.

#2 Lloyd is born August 1st, 1999 and is currently 15 years old. He is eligible to play in the U17 age category in events that take place before December 31st, 2014 and after January 1st, 2015,  as he is under 17 years old in both the 2014 and 2015 calendar years.
