Definition

The BC Junior A and Senior Provincial Ranking is a list of players/pairs in the order of total points received from an athlete’s three best results. Key facts about the Provincial Ranking System are below:

Events included in the Provincial Rankings

The Rankings are compiled from the results of Badminton BC Series tournaments including the Provincial Championships. There are  series tournaments for the Junior A, Seniors (Open) and Masters and a Provincial championship in each category. The number of tournaments may change from year to year.

Points System for Junior and Senior (Open) Categories

Players/pairs gain points according to how far they progress in the draw of a particular event. If a player/pair:

  • Has a bye in the first round and loses in the second round – they will receive the first round loser’s points.

  • Has a bye in the first round, wins the second round and loses in the third round – they will receive the third round loser’s points.

  • Has a walkover in the first round and loses in the second round – they will receive the second round loser’s points.

  • Has a bye in the first round, has a walkover in the second round and loses in the third round – they will receive the third round loser’s points.

Junior Ranking and Seeding

  • A player's BC Ranking will be based on points accumulated from the player's three best results in a specific event and age category at any of the BC Junior Series tournaments or the BC Provincial Championships held.
  • Seeding for Badminton BC sanctioned tournaments will be based on a player’s points (best three results regardless of age category) over the last 12 months. However, Badminton BC will place a weight on tournament points depending on the age category a player has participated towards the seeding. See the calculation example below for details.
    • If a player played in U19 age category, 100% of their points will calculate for their seeding. The winner of U19 will get 638 points towards their seeding.
    • If a player had played in U17 age category, ½ of the U19 points will be used for their seeding. This will be (638/2) =319.
    • If a player had played in U15 age category, ½ of the U17 points will be used for their seeding. This will be (319/2) =159.50
    • If a player had played in U13 age category, ½ of the U15 points will be used for their seeding. This will be (159.50/2) =79.75
    • If a player had played in U11 age category, ½ of the U13 points will be used for their seeding. This will be (79.75/2) =39.87
  • This will be used to determine the order of seeds throughout all age categories.

  • Athletes that remain in the same age category will use their existing points for seeding in the new season. For athletes moving up into an older age category, they will carry forward a percentage of their points for use at the tournaments they participate in the new season. Athletes moving from Under 11 to Under 13, athletes moving from Under 13 to Under 15, athletes moving from Under 15 to Under 17 and athletes moving from Under 17 to Under 19 will carry forward 50% of their points from the last season.
  • For Doubles and Mixed Doubles, the best three results of both players will be added together.
  • If players/pairs are within 100 points of each other, the seeding may be altered if the player/pair with fewer points has beaten or progressed further in a draw than the higher ranked player/pair in recent events.
  • In the event where a very strong player from out of country/province plays in a BC Series tournament, the seeding will be determined based on the best results data available.
