The 2018 WCTCs were hosted by Badminton Alberta at the Calgary Winter Club, and our Team BC athletes competed in the Dawson Cup (U-15), Paulson Cup (U-17), and Clarkson Cup (U-19) in their respective age groups. The tournament format is a team event, consisting of one match in each of the five event disciplines (1x BS, GS, BD, GD, & XD) with our Team BC athletes competing against some of the top athletes from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

Our U-15, U-17, and U-19 elite provincial athletes are on the performance pathway advancing towards events such as the 2019 Canada Winter Games and podium results beyond. Along this journey they will be exposed to advanced training and competition opportunities, as well as the latest in performance services from Badminton BC and our partners to support their performances in chosen events and support overall development as provincial elite athletes in their respective LTAD stages.

Special thanks to our club coaches and their tireless efforts in player development and preparing the athletes for this event. Primary coaches for our athletes include Rock Lai (Drive), Franky Lin (ACE), Al Mawani (Shuttlesport), Ram Nayyar (VLTBC), Linling Wang (Linling Badminton), Ximing Yao (VRC), & Darryl Yung (ClearOne). We would also like to extend our gratitude to secondary coaches and other support staff as well!

Additionally, the team will be led by coaches, Graeme MacInnes (Victoria), mentor coach at the 2018 BC Games, and Phyllis Chan (Vancouver), 2018 Thomas/Uber Cup assistant coach, and former national team & Team BC athlete.

Last year’s Western Canadian Team Championship in Saskatoon saw a close competition between British Columbia and Alberta that eventually ended in a gold medal for BC. This year, Team BC is looking to continue its winning ways inspired by its recent string of gold medal performances at this event.

Provincial rivalries aside, the tournament promises to be a fun and unique experience for all the athletes. “Team event format is not only exciting for players and fans it really brings the athletes together and provides a valuable experience in formats played at major multi-sport games, like the Canada Games.  We need to compete in these events more often,” says Penny Gardner, Executive Director of Badminton BC.

Matches will begin at 11:00 am on Friday, April 20 at the Calgary Winter Club. For more information and updates on the tournament schedule, visit the Badminton BC website  and follow the results on Facebook and Instagram.

About Multi Sport Games Development

Athletes and coaches who have participated in a BC Games, North American Indigenous Games, or Canada Games understand that competing in a multi-sport games environment is very different than competing in a single sport competition. Athletes must learn how to manage distractions – from residing in an athletes' village with athletes from numerous sports and with very different schedules, to dealing with heightened media attention and transportation challenges, to competing in front of a larger crowd.

Athletes also quickly understand the significance of competing as part of a larger team - whether for their zone at a BC Games or province in the case of the North American Indigenous Games, and Canada Games – and that every individual result counts towards the greater team goal of finishing first overall. As athletes progress along the development pathway, BC Games, NAIG, and Team BC provide valuable learning experiences that prepare them for international multi-sport games competitions.
