Vancouver, BC – Jessica Leung and Nathan Choi, both of Vancouver, have been selected to represent Canada at the 2010 World Junior Badminton Championships from April 16th to April 25th in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The Canadian Team will participate in the Team Championship from the 16th to the 20th and the Individual Championship will run from April 21st to April 25th.
Jessica, 17, is the highest ranking U19 female singles player in the country and part of the highest ranked U19 female doubles team in the country and recently secured her spot by coming second in U19 Girls Singles and winning the U19 Girls Doubles at the recent Badminton Canada BC Junior Elite held at Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club on March 12th to 14th, 2010.
Nathan, 15, is the part of the highest ranked U16 Boys Doubles team in Canada and secured his spot by winning Bronze at the BC Junior Elite in U19 Boys Doubles.
Selection was dependent upon placing in the Badminton Canada Junior Elite Series tournaments in the 2009-10 season.
These selections continue to show the dominance that British Columbia has on the national Badminton scene. With only 13% of the population of Canada, BC continues to have more than 25% of the Junior and Senior national team selections. In the 2008-09 season, BC players won 44 of 107 national championship medals in all age groups including the Senior Open category. On the participation side, BC currently has over 100,000 people who play Badminton on a regular basis.
