2011 Canada Winter Games

Report on 2011 Canada Winter Games - Badminton

June 2, 2011

The Canada Winter Games is one of only a few key multi-sport games opportunities for athletes to experience before they strive to reach the podium at the ultimate multi-sport games: The Olympics!

The more opportunities that athletes have to experience the unique (and challenging) aspects of multi-sport games, starting with the first games on the athlete pathway - the BC Winter Games - the greater their chance to succeed at the highest level, which is the goal of High Performance athlete development.  As such, the 2011 Canada Winter Games will help shape the future success of many of the team members as they move on to higher levels of competition.

Team BC for the 2011 Canada Winter Games was chosen by the High Performance Committee, based on a series of trials starting in August 2010, and concluding in December 2010.  The Coach and Manager were recruited through an application process and individual recruitment in 2010.

Team BC was made up of the following:

Phyllis Chan (Team Captain)
Christin Tsai
Vanora Lo
Vivian Yan
Tina Chen
Clinton Wong (Male Captain)
Nathan Choi
Eric Hsu
Duncan Yao
Benny Lin

Abdul Shailkh – Coach
Lisa Davison – Manager

Team BC was also supported by former VP – High Performance Chris Trenholme who served as member of the Team BC Mission Staff assigned to Badminton at the Games in week two.  The role of Team BC Mission Staff is to serve as liaison between the team and the overall Team BC and host society operation, ensuring as smooth experience as possible (i.e. transportation, accommodations, food, medical services, etc.).  The goal of the mission staff is to insulate the coach, manager and team to allow them to focus on what is most important—practice, rest, recovery, and performance.

This team was a unique mix of some top national level athletes like Phyllis Chan, but also contained many younger players with very promising futures, like Christin Tsai, Nathan Choi, Clinton Wong, Eric Hsu, and even younger players like Duncan Yao, Benny Lin, and Vanora Lo.  Many of these players are eligible to compete for Team BC at the 2015 Canada Winter Games.  I predict, based on their performances, that BC can look forward to winning more medals in 2015.

There were many performance highlights from these Games, including the following:
•    Silver Medal in the Team Event, defeating Alberta and Quebec along the way, and narrowly losing to Ontario in the final three matches to two.
•    Gold Medal in Mixed Doubles, won by Christin Tsai and Nathan Choi
•    Silver Medal in Women’s Singles, won by Phyllis Chan
•    Bronze Medal in Women’s Singles, won by Christin Tsai
•    Fourth Place in Mixed Doubles for Phyllis Chan and Eric Hsu
•    Quarterfinal results for Benny Lin and Clinton Wong in Men’s Singles
•    Quarterfinal results for Vanora Lo and Vivian Yan in Women’s Doubles
•    Quarterfinal results for Duncan Yao and Benny Lin in Men’s Doubles

On a personal note, there were many outstanding examples of team leadership, camaraderie, and Team BC cheer, led by Team Captain Phyllis Chan and Male Captain Clinton Wong, but exemplified by the entire team.

Some interesting human interest highlights include the following:
•    My first try at eating lobster at the team dinner at a restaurant in Halifax
•    Almost losing my way back from the restaurant in Halifax
•    Vanora’s BC Flag Cape and cheering battle with a New Brunswick fan in the team event
•    The different team cheers—including pre-team tie, after a match, and during  a match once we got to 21 points
•    Lisa Davison’s leadership and care for the team
•    Team BC rocking the house with its horns, noise makers, sunglasses, and clappers

Feedback for the future

While there were many things that went well with the overall Team BC selection, preparation, and performance for and at the Canada Winter Games, please consider the following items for the 2015 Canada Winter Games and beyond:
•    Pool of female athletes was very low from which to choose the team.  Consider ways to ensure a greater pool of female athletes for next time that still focuses on the appropriate Long Term Athlete Development Model stage (Train to Compete).
•    Coach selection and recruitment was challenging and was concluded much later than anticipated.  This has the risk of taking away from the best preparation possible (i.e. the sooner the coach is selected, the sooner he/she can work with the athletes on preparation).
•    Greater education and promotion is needed to the Membership on the value and importance of multi-sport games like the Canada Winter Games is for Long Term Athlete Development (see comments above), as well as the importance that Badminton BC places on its participation in this event (i.e. BC Government looks very closely at how well each PSO performs).
•    Overall, there needs to be a continued effort to bring together all High Performance coaches in BC so there is greater “buy-in” on Provincial opportunities like the Canada Winter Games and overall High Performance initiatives that bring together all athletes together as Team BC.  While there are many great things happening at the club/program level, there does not seem to be much support of an overall Team BC program that unites everyone towards a common goal.

I would like to thank the Province of BC through the Team BC Program, Board and Staff of Badminton BC, Team Manager Lisa Davison, Mission Staffer Chris Trenholme, Team BC Mental Trainer Rob Roy, Chef Ajay Patel, Assistant Chef Judy Joseph, Performance Director Marc Bowles, and especially the athletes for the opportunity to help lead Team BC Badminton at these Games. Thanks to Anna Rice who gave an inspirational talk, and provided the team with a lot of motivation. Thank you to the Personal Coaches Darryl Yung, Ronne Runtalao, and Sandiarto Liauw (Clearone), Calvin Holoboff and Ximing Yao (Vancouver Racquets Club), and Keith Anton (Badminton Victoria) – they have done a splendid job.  On my part, I attended their training sessions in Vancouver.

Julia Chen, Phil Weier, and Ken Thiesen are to be commended for their untiring efforts in coordinating all the activities which led to a very successful event.

I have many wonderful memories that will stay with me for a life time.

Respectfully submitted,
Abdul Shaikh, ChPC

2011 Canada Winter Games - Coach & Manager Applications

March 2, 2010

Application information for 2011 Canada Winter Games Coach and Manager positions now posted here.  This Team BC event will be taking place February 11-27, 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Deadline for submission application is April 30th, 2010.

2011 Canada Winter Games Team Selection Criteria

January 19, 2010

Background:

The Canada Winter Games are held every four years, and are the showcase of our Learning to Win (L2W) and Training to Win (T2W) athletes, as per Badminton Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD). The Canada Winter Games contest both a Team Competition and all five individual events. Athletes can compete in a maximum of two individual events.

At the 2007 Canada Winter Games, Team BC captured the Team Gold Medal, plus seven medals in the individual events, including all three medals in mixed doubles.

The 2011 Canada Winter Games will be held February 11-27 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Badminton competition will take place in week two of the Games.

Team Goal:

To win a gold in the team event and all five individual events.

Team Composition:

  • Five male athletes, born in 1988 or later;
  • Five female athletes, born in 1990 or later; and
  • One Manager and One Coach, of which one must be female and one must be male.

Selection Committee:

The Selection Committee for the 2011 Canada Winter Games Team will consist of the members of the High Performance Committee (HPC), with input from the selected Coach and Team Manager. The HPC will select the final Games roster and, with input from the selected Coach and Team Manager, determine the doubles and mixed doubles partnerships.

Athlete Eligibility:

  • Athletes must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
  • Athletes must be members in good standing with Badminton BC.
  • Athletes must be have been invited to participate in, and have accepted the invitation to, join the “Team BC – Training to Win” program for the 2010/2011 year, starting June 1, 2010. Criteria for selection to the 2010/2011 program will be published in January 2010.
  • Athletes must be available for any pre and post-selection training opportunities planned by the HPC and/or Team Coach.
  • Athletes must meet all eligibility requirements outlined in the 2011 Canada Winter Games Technical Package.

Team Selection Criteria:

Athletes will be chosen based on the following:

1.    All U23 and U19 athletes qualifying for the 2010/2011 “Team BC – Training to Win” program and who have accepted the invitation to join the program, constitute the long-list of eligible athletes, called, “2011 Canada Winter Games Long-List.” Based on a formal request from a coach, other athletes may be added to the 2010/2011 “Team BC – Training to Win” program by the High Performance Committee, prior to the end of July 2010, thus being included in the “2011 Canada Winter Games Long-List.”

2.    All athletes on the “2011 Canada Winter Games Long-List” to compete in a Trials Competition (August 2010). The Selection Committee will select the top eight male athletes and top eight female athletes to form the “2011 Canada Winter Games Short-List,” from the Trials Competition as follows:

  • top four men’s singles athletes;
  • top four women’s singles athletes;
  • top men’s doubles team;
  • top women’s doubles team; and
  • top mixed doubles team.

Note: Should all eight male and/or eight female athletes not be chosen as per above, the Selection Committee will choose the remaining male and female athletes, based on overall results from the Trials Competition. Athletes with results in all three events will be given greater consideration over athletes with results in only two or one event.

3.    All athletes on the “2011 Canada Winter Games Short-List” compete in a second Trials Competition/Camp (October 2010).

4.    All athletes on the “2011 Canada Winter Games Short-List” compete in a third Trials Competition/Camp (late November/early December 2010).

  1. All three Trials Competitions;
  2. Badminton Canada National Elite Circuits Events held between September and December 2010;

  • The Committee will select one male and one female based on each individual athlete’s ability to assist the team, “To win a gold in the team event and all five individual events.”

Note: Athletes added in the L2W (U23) or T2C (U19) age categories to the “2010/2011 Team BC – Training to Win” program after July 2010 will not be eligible for selection to the 2011 Canada Winter Games Team.
