Z-Archived: Masters Updates

2013 Canadian Masters to be held at ClearOne Badminton Centre

August 20, 2012

Following a review of many options for hosting the 2013 Canadian Masters, Badminton BC has consulted the Canadian Masters Association and Badminton Canada with the preferred hosting of the event to be at ClearOne Browngate, Richmond, BC from April 22-27, 2013.

As with any event of this size and importance there will be challenges.  To help address these challenges the next steps will be:
Badminton BC will be recruiting volunteers to form the various organizing committee(s).  Interested parties can confirm their interest/support through philw@badmintonbc.com.

Canadian Masters Association will be looking for information from the playing community, somewhat of a pre-event survey, to provide additional insight of potential concerns (along with their possible solutions) for the organizing committee to review and investigate.

With 8 months to the start of the event there is a potential to plan a magnificent competition.  We look forward to hosting the masters community and setting a new benchmark for the potential of British Columbia.

BC Masters Provincials - Kelowna, BC, March 23, 24, 25

The Kelowna Badminton Club hosted this years' Provincials this past weekend.  Ninety participants battled it out for Provincial titles.  The matches were hard fought and  unfortunately a few people were injured.  Leslie Lau and Andrew Hoffman both damaged their Achilles tendons and others had minor injuries, such as sore knees, arms and eye sockets!

Mike Mitson and his wonderful crew of volunteers kept the tournament running as smoothly as possible as timing was tight!  It takes many people to run an event and I would like to thank all of the following on behalf of those who attended:

Seeding - Denise Vines, Cindy Simpson, Frank Price
Referee - Peter Dennert
Draw Desk - Lyndsay Thomson, Brennan Arduina, Tyler Kunz, Neil Ward, Jennay Oliver, Jim Warwick
Hall Duties - Max Lauretta (jr), Carly Dal Ponte (jr), Claudia Lauretta (jr), Jarin Davison (jr)

Ramada:
Organiser - Jennay Oliver

Organisers - Jennay Oliver and Val Warwick
Volunteers - Gloria Watson, Carla Dal Ponte (jr), Aisha Aktari (jr), Angus McNee, Betty Gordon, Karen Quigley, Flo Masson, Edna Boser, Rod Oliver, Noreen Fraser, Diane Cey, Susie Svendsen, Denise Vines

We had several triple crown winners.  Check below to see which of our masters were successful in winning triple crowns this year.

Thanks to all, including some juniors, who worked for hours on the draw desk, in the kitchen and on the floor handing out shuttles and timing warmup!

Masters Update - March 5, 2012

March 5, 2012

Brentwood Seniors and Masters - February 17, 18, 19, 2012.

The sixty-five players who participated in the Brentwood Masters are to be congratulated for surviving many tough matches.  Due to the size of entry, there were many round robins and contested matches and a few injury defaults.

The full tournament can be found at: 2012 Brentwood Seniors & Masters.

Thanks to Sital Shoker, David Niven, Pat Kirk, Doreen Elvedahl, Lyndell Currie, Rick Gordon and the others of the Brentwood club and area who contributed to the running of a good tournament.

Although they moved their date forward one week to see if more players would attend, that did not work so the tournament will return to their traditional date in 2013.

Please support this tournament next season!  Bring a new member!

The up to date seedings and rankings are now online at: Current 2011-12 Masters Curcuit Rankings.

BC Masters - March 23, 24, 25, 2012 in Kelowna, BC

No player may enter more than 2 events of the same discipline (a discipline being singles, doubles or mixed.)

Winter Update - BC Masters

December 22, 2011

Badminton BC LogoPort Alberni Masters - November 18, 19, 20, 2011.

All the players owe thanks to Olga Kanigan, Marg Hudson, Bob Hudson, Trudy Chisholm, and Larry Spencer for continuing the tradition of the annual Port Alberni Masters badminton tournament.  Although the number attending (68) was one lower than last year's event, there were many hard fought matches.

As usual, the food provided throughout the tournament was enjoyed by all thanks to the culinary work of Bob, Marg, Olga and other club members!

The full results can be found at: 2011 Port Alberni Masters.

The rankings for the first two masters can be found at: Badminton BC Masters Circuit Rankings.

The next Masters Tournament in our circuit will be the VLTBC Masters on January 27 - 29, 2012.  Information should be out soon!

As V-P Masters, I issued a challenge to the players that were in Port Alberni and am issuing it to all other masters badminton players as well as open players to bring someone new into at least one of the remaining events for this season to help in increasing participation numbers in our events!

Wishing all of you A Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

Summer INTO Fall Masters Update

September 19, 2011

Badminton BC Logo2011 BC Seniors Games - August 16 - 20, 2011

Castlegar hosted the badminton event in Selkirk College.  Seventy-nine players entered and competed for medals in singles, doubles and mixed events.  The results can be found on Tournament Software at 2011 BC Seniors Games - Badminton.

The next 55+ Seniors Games will be held in Burnaby, August 21 - 25, 2012.

2011 World Senior Championships - August 21 - 27, 2011

The Richmond Olympic Oval was the venue for the 2011 World Championships in late August.  Canada led the number of entries with India second.  There were 39 countries represented.  As a competitor I want to thank the organizing committee for running the event and dealing with many unusual problems.

In particular, I wanted to publically acknowledge the work done by Noah Wang to recruit, train and supervise the linespeople for the event.  Noah spent countless volunteer hours with his crew.  I was particularly impressed when I watched him time and time again, go around to each of his courts prior to a match and say or just touch his linespeople to show support and encouragement.  Each and every match had a full complement of officials.  Noah's dedication and hard work was appreciated by all of the competitors so, I say thanks to Noah and his team for a job well done!

Results of the World Seniors can be found at BWF World Senior Championships 2011.

For those of us who played, we now have a WBF number and your results are found in a BWF tournament software file.

2011 - 2012 Masters Circuit & Provincials

The upcoming schedule for Masters Circuit events is published at 2011/12 Masters Elite Ranking Tournaments.

Be aware, that although a bid package was to go out, due to unusual circumstances, the Kelowna Badminton Club will be hosting two tournaments in our circuit.

March 23 - 25th will be the BC Masters in Kelowna and April 20 - 22 will be the Ogopogo Masters in Kelowna.  The change of date for Provincials and order of play is due to the fact the the National Masters will be held in May, and the spacing of these two tournaments is to allow for competition preparation prior to the Nationals.

Mike Mitson, will be the tournament chairperson for each event.

See you on the courts!

2011 – 2012 Season

BC Masters 2012

Also, a bid package will be sent out for hosting of the 2012 BC Masters Provincials.  The date of this event will be sometime in April to give players another competitive event to play and practice in prior to the Canadians which will be held May 7 – 12, 2012 in Quebec City at Laval University.  This change of date of our provincials will be for the 2011–12 season only.

Frank Price, Marian Holoboff, and Committee are to be congratulated on a job well done!  Special thanks to Jack Rogers for dual service - as the referee and draw desk director!

February 2011 Masters Update!

Feb 23, 2011

President's Award!

Many of you may not be aware but through Sport BC, a President's Award is given each year by the various PSO's or Provincial Sport Organizations.  Last year, Sital Shoker was presented as badminton's choice for the award.  This year, the recipient is Mike Christian, President of the Kelowna Badminton Club.  Mike will receive his award from Badminton BC President David Niven, at a ceremony on Feb. 24th at the River Rock Casino.  Congratulations, Mike.

VLTBC and Brentwood Tournaments!

Unfortunately, I cannot report on the VLTBC or the Brentwood tournaments as I did not attend.  I did look at the results and entries on Tournament Software.  VLTBC had an entry of 73 but three were in the exhibition age of 30+.  Brentwood had an entry of 67.  In both tournaments, the top end and the bottom end are missing players!  Hopefully, many more will attend the BC Masters.  In checking the entry yesterday, it was at 34 which is a strong, early indicator of a good entry as many people wait until the last day to enter!

The entry Deadline for the BC Masters is Monday, Feb. 28th just before midnight.  Please enter online at 2011 BC Masters Provincial Championships

Please make an account for yourself and in the future when you use Tournament Software, your information will be stored and will autofill except for choices and payment criteria.  You can pay by credit card as well.  It will say PayPal but go one page further and you can use your credit card if you wish.

The committee at the VRC, headed by Frank Price and Marian Holoboff, is working hard to give us a great tournament, so come out and support it!

Also, a reminder, the tournament fee now includes the cost for medals.  Prior to this event, the cost was absorbed by Badminton BC.  From this tournament on, the cost is built into the $100 fee as well as your social events, souvenir, HST, shuttles and any other expenses, i.e. rentals, officials, etc.  If you wish to receive a medal, you must contact the tournament committee.  There are no details at the time of registration but I am sure that a committee member will be happy to answer any questions re this matter.

Kelowna Ogopogo Masters - March 25, 26, 27, 2011

The information can be found at Ogopogo Masters 2011 for registration and other information.

The entry Deadline is Friday, March 18th just before midnight.

Be aware that the regulations state the following important pieces of information:

Start Time: Friday March 25th 5:00pm : Mixed 60 and up

Maximum 4 event entry and 2 age groups

Remember to bookmark their site as they use their own licensed Tournament Software for the running and publishing of the tournament.

It is hard to believe that the BC's and Kelowna are our two last tournaments of the season!

See  you on the courts!

Masters Update - November 23, 2010

Nov 24, 2010

Port Alberni Masters!

Pictured below is the new venue or Alberni Athletic Hall for sport in PA!  The hall has six badminton courts with bleachers, a fairly high ceiling, a large party/registration area upstairs, plenty of washrooms, showers downstairs, wheelchair accessibility, brownish walls and a beautiful Eastern Maple floor.  Of course, there is more finishing to be done and the curtain to be moved into place.  However, the tournament with 69 entries was held this past weekend and all seemed to have a good time!  The tournament is now posted on www.tournamentsoftware.com.

2010 Port Alberni Masters - Alberni Athletic Hall 001

The first match of the evening was a 65+ mixed match and it was only fitting that the hard-working Port Alberni master player, Marg Hudson, was involved in the match with Murray Foubister and two islanders, Wally Hrybko of Sayward and Anna Robitaille of Courtenay!

The photo below shows part of the gym to give you an idea of how it looks!  The official opening of the facility is on Saturday, November 27, 2010.

2010 Port Alberni Masters - Alberni Athletic Hall 003

The final match of the tournament was, of course a very close three game match, with Marc Petreman and Damaris Brix versus Clara Wai and Peter Brix!

2010 Port Alberni Masters - Alberni Athletic Hall 004

Everyone who attended would like to express their gratitude for running these tournaments over the years, to the ladies below!  Believe it or not, both just returned from holidays and managed to supply the food and draw desk workings, prizes at the dinner, registration and only they know what else,  for us all!  Thanks, Olga and Marg!

The first tournament of the masters circuit was hosted by the Vancouver Racquets Club last weekend.  The total entry was 99 of which 11 or so were playing exhibition matches in the 30+ event.

Frank Price, Carol Taylor and Jack Rogers are to be commended for running the tournament and for using tournament software!  It was wonderful to see the committee take the risk to use the software and by next year, they will have worked out any glitches!

The committee also wanted to have a 30+ event which replaced the 35+ event to see how the entry would be.  There was growth in this area as Kelowna put in a 30+ in their masters last March but only had a total of 4 male entries in the 30+ events.

Port Alberni will also add 30+ events and they will be included as exhibition events.  Before we change our format to include 30+ events, we need to see if players attend.  Any of the other tournaments that wish to include 30+ exhibition events for the rest of this season are welcome to do so.  Following the season we will look at the number of entries in each tournament and event, how much time was taken up and the impact on the 35+ events before making a decision as to whether or not to include them in our full schedule for the 2011 - 12 season.

Port Alberni Masters - November 19, 20,  21, 2010

Wow, how often does one get to christen a new hall for badminton?

Take the opportunity and attend the upcoming Port Alberni Masters tournament in the new Alberni Athletic Hall!

Please, let us all support the players from Alberni who work so hard to put on tournaments and who always support our masters circuit events!

Let's make a goal of over 100 entries!  Bring a new player to help round out our numbers and  hopefully the trickle down effect will help attendance at our other masters tournaments!

Larry Spencer has agreed to have online registration using tournament software!  The information has been uploaded online!  Please be aware, that payment will be made at the tournament!

Also, as this tournament is sanctioned, you must be a member of Badminton BC to participate!  Make your bill smaller by paying in advance at www.badmintonbc.com!

The entry deadline is Friday, November 12, 2010!

Island Tournaments are awesome!  Attend and enjoy!

Masters Update from VP Masters, Cindy Simpson

April 20, 2010

The final event in the BC Masters Circuit was held in Kelowna on March 26, 27, 28, 2010.

The entry was at 95 and there were some wonderful matches, particularly in mixed doubles as teams were trying out new partnerships in preparation for the Canadian National Masters Championships which are also hosted by the Kelowna Club and begin next week.

The draws and timing for this fantastic event of 285 entries can be found at 2010 Canadian Masters Badminton Championships.

As our BC Masters Circuit is now completed for this season, it is time to start planning for next season.

Marg Hudson has already submitted the date for the Port Alberni Masters - Nov. 19, 20 and 21, 2010 AND we hope that the new facility will be completed by then.

I will be contacting the other tournament chairs from this season's events and requesting their dates.

As well, shortly a notice will go out requesting bids for the 2011 BC Masters Provincials!  Prince George's event will be a hard act to follow!

Masters Update by Cindy Simpson, VP Masters

March 17, 2010

2010 BC Masters - Lance Gordon & Don Hill

Lance Gordon (Prince George) & Don Hill (Terrace) competing in the BC Masters in Prince George this past weekend!

BC Masters!

The College of New Caledonia was the eight court venue for the BC Masters Championships held in Prince George this past weekend.

Tournament Chair, Patty Wadson and her volunteer committee did a wonderful job of hosting the event.

Each competitor received an embroidered towel, free water, sport drinks and snacks during the event and an opportunity to order and prepay for a lunch which was delivered on time!  The Saturday night social was held at the Treasure Cove Resort and Casino!  At the dinner, which was marvellous and pre-ordered as well, the only glitch was that 46 was too many for one area and we had to be separated.

Patty had draw prizes for everyone and some major  draw prizes as well!  After dinner, we were able to proceed into the casino with a free $5 voucher and try our hand at gambling!  Believe me when I say, that many people won!

Lisa Davison and her draw desk committee also worked hard to ensure that players had many matches!  Lisa was creative with the draws and most players had a good number of matches!  Her draw desk workers were very capable!  Thanks to Jeff Cunin for umpiring some matches and to Rob Oldfield, the referee.

Many of us have been attending Masters Provincials for many years and for the first time ever, the majority of areas of our province were represented.  Such cities as Terrace, Prince George, Dawson Creek, Kelowna, Westbank, Vernon, Trail, Abbotsford, Port Alberni, Vancouver, Surrey, Campbell River, Delta, Victoria and Kamloops were represented!

Some highlights!

  • a rather loud expletive  during a mixed doubles match
  • socializing and making new friends as never before seen at a masters tournament
  • Rob introducing new players to the matching shirt concept
  • Tony playing in his gardening shoes
  • Denise winning "big" in the casino and Patty following her on the same machine and winning "even more"
  • Louis Gagne showing up out of the northern woods
  • lots of laughter, great play, good food and good times!
  • Joanne tending to Gordie medically - that's what partners are for

Here is a current results list of the Masters Provincials!

Kelowna awarded 2010 Canadian Masters Championship

December 10, 2009

The Kelowna Badminton Club was selected by Badminton BC to host the 2010 Canadian Masters Badminton Championships April 25 to May 1, 2010.  Click "Read more..." below for more information.

Click here to go to the 2010 Canadian Masters Championships website.

Vancouver, BC:  The Kelowna Badminton Club was selected by Badminton BC to host the 2010 Canadian Masters Badminton Championships April 25 to May 1, 2010.

The tournament is awarded to the provincial member of Badminton Canada (Badminton BC) and Badminton BC chose Kelowna based on a superior bid.

Brock Turner, CEO of Badminton BC, remarked that Kelowna will be a great host for the tournament.  “The Kelowna Badminton Club used the resources of Sport Kelowna and Tourism Kelowna to put together a very attractive bid and, ultimately, they won.  We look forward to a great competition.”

Susan Rogers and Denise Vines, co-Chairs of the local organizing committee, are very excited to get the Bid.  “When Badminton BC talked to eligible clubs about hosting, we immediately jumped at the chance.  It is a great experience to be able to host a tournament like this as they are mostly held in the larger centres.  We know we will put on a first class tournament.”

Badminton BC was concerned that the tourney would be compromised by hosting the event in BC as it is typically held during March and there would be a conflict with the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.  The national tournament schedule is set out four years in advance and 2010 was the year for BC to host the Masters tournament.  When the schedule was released to the provincial bodies, BC approached Quebec to switch years.   Quebec was unable to take on the tournament in 2010 so Badminton BC worked with Badminton Canada to have the tournament date changed and to move the tournament outside of the Lower Mainland.

The Masters tournaments are for players 35 years old and above.  Each age group is set in five year increments up to 80+. Events include all traditional Badminton events of Men’s and Women’s Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles for each age group.

Badminton BC’s mission is to “build champions” of the sport at all levels in all areas of the province of British Columbia.  Badminton BC is one of most successful Badminton provincial sport organizations in Canada.  Originally formed in 1925, it is also one of the oldest PSO’s in the country. For more information about Badminton BC and its programs, please visit www.badmintonbc.com.

The Kelowna Badminton Club, one of the oldest incorporated Badminton Clubs in Canada, is located in the heart of the Okanagan.  Originally started in 1910, the Club had a couple of hall locations until it settled into the current location at 1098 Richter Street about 3 blocks from Prospera Place.  The present hall’s official opening was October 14, 1950. The facility is one of the best in B.C. and the only one of its kind in the B.C. interior.  With almost 500 members, the club membership is a mix of ages and skills; from 8 to 80+, beginners to advanced, recreational and competitive.

Port Alberni Masters was held in November 2009!

This event was held in the high school due to loss of the Alberni Athletic Hall to fire.  Next year, the venue will be the same, (unless the new hall is ready) but the net and post system will be different.  Although only 55 players attended, the tournament  was great and everyone had a good time.  Thanks to Larry, Marg, Bob and Trudy for all of their hard work.

Also, out of 55 players, 54 are members of BBC.  Well Done!  The tournament is up at www.tournamentsoftware.com if you wish to see the results.

VRC Masters - October 23 - 24, 2009

The attendance at this first Masters event of the year was at 92 with the majority of players from the VRC.  The results are up at http://www.vrc.bc.ca/Masters.html .  A good time was had by all and the hula hooping was fascinating to watch!

As this tournament is also a circuit event, players need to be members of BBC.  Hopefully by now, the 41 players needing their memberships have now secured them so that they can play on in the other Masters circuit events.
