As our BC Masters Circuit is now completed for this season, it is time to start planning for next season.
Marg Hudson has already submitted the date for the Port Alberni Masters - Nov. 19, 20 and 21, 2010 AND we hope that the new facility will be completed by then.

Lance Gordon (Prince George) & Don Hill (Terrace) competing in the BC Masters in Prince George this past weekend!
BC Masters!
The College of New Caledonia was the eight court venue for the BC Masters Championships held in Prince George this past weekend.
Tournament Chair, Patty Wadson and her volunteer committee did a wonderful job of hosting the event.
Each competitor received an embroidered towel, free water, sport drinks and snacks during the event and an opportunity to order and prepay for a lunch which was delivered on time! The Saturday night social was held at the Treasure Cove Resort and Casino! At the dinner, which was marvellous and pre-ordered as well, the only glitch was that 46 was too many for one area and we had to be separated.
Patty had draw prizes for everyone and some major draw prizes as well! After dinner, we were able to proceed into the casino with a free $5 voucher and try our hand at gambling! Believe me when I say, that many people won!
Lisa Davison and her draw desk committee also worked hard to ensure that players had many matches! Lisa was creative with the draws and most players had a good number of matches! Her draw desk workers were very capable! Thanks to Jeff Cunin for umpiring some matches and to Rob Oldfield, the referee.
Many of us have been attending Masters Provincials for many years and for the first time ever, the majority of areas of our province were represented. Such cities as Terrace, Prince George, Dawson Creek, Kelowna, Westbank, Vernon, Trail, Abbotsford, Port Alberni, Vancouver, Surrey, Campbell River, Delta, Victoria and Kamloops were represented!
Some highlights!
- a rather loud expletive during a mixed doubles match
- socializing and making new friends as never before seen at a masters tournament
- Rob introducing new players to the matching shirt concept
- Tony playing in his gardening shoes
- Denise winning "big" in the casino and Patty following her on the same machine and winning "even more"
- Louis Gagne showing up out of the northern woods
- lots of laughter, great play, good food and good times!
- Joanne tending to Gordie medically - that's what partners are for
Here is a current results list of the Masters Provincials!

Kelowna awarded 2010 Canadian Masters Championship
December 10, 2009
Vancouver, BC: The Kelowna Badminton Club was selected by Badminton BC to host the 2010 Canadian Masters Badminton Championships April 25 to May 1, 2010.
The tournament is awarded to the provincial member of Badminton Canada (Badminton BC) and Badminton BC chose Kelowna based on a superior bid.
Brock Turner, CEO of Badminton BC, remarked that Kelowna will be a great host for the tournament. “The Kelowna Badminton Club used the resources of Sport Kelowna and Tourism Kelowna to put together a very attractive bid and, ultimately, they won. We look forward to a great competition.”
Susan Rogers and Denise Vines, co-Chairs of the local organizing committee, are very excited to get the Bid. “When Badminton BC talked to eligible clubs about hosting, we immediately jumped at the chance. It is a great experience to be able to host a tournament like this as they are mostly held in the larger centres. We know we will put on a first class tournament.”
Badminton BC was concerned that the tourney would be compromised by hosting the event in BC as it is typically held during March and there would be a conflict with the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The national tournament schedule is set out four years in advance and 2010 was the year for BC to host the Masters tournament. When the schedule was released to the provincial bodies, BC approached Quebec to switch years. Quebec was unable to take on the tournament in 2010 so Badminton BC worked with Badminton Canada to have the tournament date changed and to move the tournament outside of the Lower Mainland.
The Masters tournaments are for players 35 years old and above. Each age group is set in five year increments up to 80+. Events include all traditional Badminton events of Men’s and Women’s Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles for each age group.
Badminton BC’s mission is to “build champions” of the sport at all levels in all areas of the province of British Columbia. Badminton BC is one of most successful Badminton provincial sport organizations in Canada. Originally formed in 1925, it is also one of the oldest PSO’s in the country. For more information about Badminton BC and its programs, please visit www.badmintonbc.com.
The Kelowna Badminton Club, one of the oldest incorporated Badminton Clubs in Canada, is located in the heart of the Okanagan. Originally started in 1910, the Club had a couple of hall locations until it settled into the current location at 1098 Richter Street about 3 blocks from Prospera Place. The present hall’s official opening was October 14, 1950. The facility is one of the best in B.C. and the only one of its kind in the B.C. interior. With almost 500 members, the club membership is a mix of ages and skills; from 8 to 80+, beginners to advanced, recreational and competitive.
