Roles and Responsibilities
Hellena was appointed as a Director in May of 2020. Hellena has been involved in badminton since the age of 13. She started off as a competitive junior player in Alberta and has remained an active competitive recreational player. The sport has for the most part, played a significant role in her life and this is no more evident than now. Currently, Hellena has a son who also competes and trains in the sport. As a result, her involvement in the sport has expanded. In 2016, she and other badminton parents formed a badminton parents committee with Hellena being the president. The primary purpose of this committee was to raise funds for the young players to offset the costly badminton expense. She remained as president until 2018. Since then, she moved to Vancouver and has continued to be active as both a player and supporter.

Gurpal Bisra

Roles and Responsibilities
Gurpal was appointed as a Director in August of 2021. He currently works as a data scientist in the public sector and cofounded a healthcare data analytics company. He excels at using his diverse skill sets, including bioengineering and operations research, to help people and optimize the use of resources. Gurpal became passionate about badminton while playing backyard badminton with his dad during his childhood. After joining his high school team, he played at various drop-in sessions throughout Europe, at the Absolutely Badminton Club as a member of the LGBT+ community, and presently plays at the Vancouver Racquets Club. Apart from building robots and doing Kaggle competitions, he enjoys gardening, painting, and biking in his spare time.

Treasurer
Mei Chang

Roles and Responsibilities
Mei is a CPA Senior Manager at an accounting firm, where she specializes in providing audit and assurance services, as well as personal and corporate tax advisory services, to a diverse range of clients, primarily in the private enterprise and non-for-profit sectors. Originally from South America, Mei moved to Canada in 2010 due to a work opportunity. She is bilingual, with full proficiency in Spanish, English, and Cantonese. In September 2023, Mei joined the Board of Directors for Badminton BC as a Treasurer. Although she is not proficient in badminton, Mei became familiar with the sport through her circle of friends who are skilled in it. In her spare time, Mei enjoys traveling, food tasting, and photography. She also values spending quality time with her family and friends, attending sports events, and focusing on wellness and fitness.

Lisa works as a real estate lawyer in Downtown Vancouver and lives in Port Moody with her husband and young son. Growing up in a small town in the Fraser Valley, her backyard was transformed into an outdoor badminton court every summer for the whole neighbourhood. She is passionate about growing badminton as a safe, inclusive and healthy sport for all. Through her involvement in Badminton BC, she hopes to help build upon existing momentum for the sport, both at a grassroots level, and through Canadians' successeses, both domestically and internationally. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, creative writing, and spending time in nature.

Henry Wong

Henry Wong was the previous President of the Board of Badminton BC from October 2017-October 2022. Henry is an active badminton player, NCCP certified coach and Badminton BC accredited umpire. He is also the former President of Westlu Badminton Club, a not-for-profit BC registered society based in Richmond. Henry served in the organizing committee of the 2016 Americas Masters Games and the 2018 Canadian National Masters Championships.
Thomas Kwan

Thomas was appointed as a Director of Badminton BC in September 2023. He is a registered professional engineer in British Columbia and currently works as an executive in the federal public service. Thomas has been very passionate about badminton since high school and continues to play recreationally at local community centers and various badminton facilities in the Metro Vancouver area. He is committed to the growth and development of badminton across all communities in BC by making the sport more accessible and available to all residents of the province.
